As we work primarily with young people we have a team of ‘mentor’ carers most of whom are currently studying qualifications within the ‘helping’ professions. Pirates carers are currently studying:
- Nursing
- Medicine
- Social Work
- Physiotherapy
- Education
- Psychology
- Community Services
- Behaviour Support
We are incredibly proud of our team – they are committed, hard working, quick thinking, compassionate and keen to learn new skills and information. As they are generally free on weekends to work – we provide ‘long’ shifts which mazimises income to Uni students through penalty rates and provides continuity of care for our young people needing a familiar face over a 48 hr period.
This is win – win – happy staff and happy young participants.
All workers carry a Blue Card and Yellow Card – in other words they have been screened as suitable to work with people with disabilities and importantly – young people.
Pirates Rest provides both in-house training and provides Medication Administration training for our senior carers.
